Volunteering Opportunities during the National Science and Technology Week



Canada Science and Technology Museum
Dates: October 19-20-26-27 (weekends)
Hours: 9:45 am to (approx) 4 pm
4 volunteers per day
Your role: Animate activities, crafts, and games.


What is is the National Science and Technology Week?
Celebrate National Science and Technology Week at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. On October 19, 20, 26 and 27, take part in exciting hands-on activities. Try your hand at science experiments, and discover how science and technology touch the lives of all Canadians. DIY Giant Marble Run

10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Let your imagination run free. Create a path for your marble to travel using funnels, pulleys and tubes through the Museum’s giant marble run.

Big Board Game

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Take part in the Museum’s giant board game—where you are the life-sized playing piece. Test your knowledge of inventions and machines

Scavenger Hunt

October 18 to 27
Explore science and technology in Canada with this original scavenger hunt that the whole family can enjoy.

Incredible Towers

Saturday October 19
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Build tall towers and strong bridges using Kapla® blocks while learning about the forces that keep them standing. This activity is offered in partnership with the Professional Engineers of Ontario—Ottawa Chapter

Gooey Chemistry

October 27
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Calling all budding chemists! Join us for some cool experiments exploring the science of polymers, and make your own slime to take home.

Help Us Set a World Record

October 18
1:00 p.m.
Be part of the Largest Practical Science Lesson World Record. All across Canada, people of all ages will be taking part in the same science experiment. Join in on Friday, October 18, 2013, and help achieve a world record. The experiment starts at 1:00 p.m. sharp.

Chemistry on Stage

October 26-27
1:30 p.m.
Be amazed by this interactive presentation packed with fizzing, popping, and flaming experiments.

Rubik’s Cube Challenge

October 20
9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Solving a Rubik’s cube is not easy. Can you imagine doing it quickly, or blindfolded? Join youth from the Club de Cube de L’Escale who do just that, and learn some of their tricks. Fun for all ages!

Storytelling — Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The bird has his heart set on driving the bus, but the driver has asked you to stop him. Will you be able to stand up to the pigeon?

Robotics Demonstrations

October 20
10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Try your hand at controlling a robot. Join kids from the WAFFLES Robotics Club and the All Saints Robotics Team who will show you how!

Public Stargazing

Saturday, October 19, 2013 
7 p.m.
Stargazers of all ages enjoy an evening of astronomy at the Museum’s Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Weather permitting, visitors can look through the historic 15-inch telescope at the stars, the planets, and the Moon.
This program is free with donation. Your generosity helps the Museum maintain the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory and the astronomy programs.
Dress warmly — all presentations take place outdoors!

Solar Observing

Saturday, October 19, 2013 
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Safely observe the Sun using the Museum’s solar telescopes at the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Discover bright solar prominences and dark sunspots on the Sun’s surface.

Family Astronomy Workshops- Eclipsing Moon

Friday, October 18, 2013 
7 p.m.
Designed for kids ages 6 to 12, these hands-on family workshops feature take-home crafts. Each workshop offers new discovery activities to encourage children’s exploration of the world of astronomy. Explore lunar eclipses and watch the penumbral eclipse of the Moon live through the Museum’s telescopes (or bring your own!) The telescope portion of the evening is weather permitting — dress warmly. Advanced registration is required.

For School Groups:

NSTW Lecture Series

October 22 and 23, 2013 
10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
Enjoy one of the Museum’s exciting lectures showcasing dynamic research by Canadian scientists and engineers. This is a perfect opportunity for students in Grades 9/Secondary 3 and up to explore potential careers in science, while supplementing your science curriculum. School groups only. Pre-registration required.

What Museums Do: Behind the Scenes

October 24, 2013 
9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

There’s more to museums than meets the eye! Go behind the scenes and learn more about some of the exciting work we do. For grades 5 and up. Please reserve early, as spaces are limited. Due to the special nature of this program, groups must have a minimum of one adult supervisor per 10 students. For groups of 15 to 20 participants (larger groups can be split). Special fee of $8 per student, which includes Museum admission.
